Evolving a new work

While some artworks seem to create themselves almost, others evolve painstakingly through many versions as ideas are refined. My expressive, bold painting Surrender is a good example of this process. It is part of a series exploring intimacy in men and women’s relationships and featuring cages.

Surrender reflection

Like most artists, I find the process of creating the most absorbing and sometimes lose interest in a work once it’s finished. Yet I still find Surrender interesting despite having painting it many years ago, and it’s likely a Surrender 2 will make an appearance sometime in the future.

Going through my old files I found these three sketches I did of Surrender in various media - a pen and ink drawing, a coloured sketch where I added a reflection of the couple as a feature, and a mixed media work using cardboard and paint. Each sketch is interesting in its own way and resolved some of the issues I was having with the painting.
